There's nothing holding Shawn Mendes back from shouting out his 2024 MTV Video Music Awards date.
The "Why Why Why" singer shared that he attended the award show at New York's UBS Arena on Sept. 11 with his sister Aaliyah Mendes by reacting to an adorable photo of them posing on the red carpet. (See all the celebs who showed out for the 2024 VMAs here.)
Replying to a snap of him wrapping his arm around his younger sibling's waist, Shawn wrote in a message on X Sept. 11, "That's my sister," along with six crying and three flaming heart emojis.
And the pair were certainly a glamorous duo for music's big night, which was hosted by Megan Thee Stallion. Shawn—who was also on the lineup to perform at the ceremony alongside Sabrina Carpenter, who he sparked romance rumors with in March 2023, and ex Camila Cabello—rocked an all-black Dolce & Gabbana ensemble that featured a cropped suit jacket, button-down shirt, trousers and dress shoes. To top off the look, the 26-year-old wore silver pendant necklace and statement ring.
As for Aaliyah, she coordinated with her date in an all-black 'fit, turning heads in a lace corset and floor-length satin skirt. Finishing off the stunning getup, the 20-year-old styled her hair in a sleek updo.
And Shawn didn't only steal the show on the carpet. The Grammy winner earned a massive round of applause when he took the stage to sing "Why Why Why," a single he released back in August that hints he and a former partner went through a pregnancy scare.
For Shawn, putting the tracks that he wrote for his latest album, Shawn, out into the world has been like "medicine."
“Two years ago I felt like I had absolutely no idea who I was,” he wrote in a July Instagram post. “A year ago I couldn’t step into a studio without falling into complete panic."
Shawn added, "So, to be here right now with 12 beautiful finished songs feels like such a gift.”
